Enduring Understandings

• Azulejos were considered both decorative and functional tiles in Portugal and Brazil. 

• Radial designs consist of one section or piece that can be translated or rotated into larger artworks. 

• Complementary colors create contrast with one another since they are across from each other on the color wheel. 

• Printmaking used to be a way to pass out information; and has now become an artform itself. 

Essential Questions

• How can the use of negative and positive space affect a print’s composition?

• How do artists take inspiration from different cultures?

• How can the elements of design – color, line, space, value, and texture – be applied to a relief print?

• How can art serve both “function” and “fashion?”

• Why do artists use printmaking when other forms of image creation exist?
